The Greeks and Romans usually assumed that their gods were worshipped by all peoples, albeit under different names. One myth, for example, claimed that the Egyptian deities were animal-headed because the Greek gods had fled to Egypt and disguised themselves as animals to escape the terrible monster Typhoeus. Some Greeks speculated that the Jewish God was really Dionysus.
