Elephants could, however, become problematic when crossing a wide river or a mountain pass. Their dislike of being transported over water required generals to either find a shallow ford or build special rafts covered with soil and turf. And since elephants cannot easily bend their knees, steep slopes required the construction of either steps or—on at least one occasion—gigantic transport sleds.
