In pre-Conquest England – as in much of early medieval Europe – it was the norm to slaughter or enslave rebels and opponents captured in battle. By the mid-eleventh century, however, conventions had begun to change on the continent. Noblemen there now preferred to spare and ransom each other in battle (though such courtesies were not extended to non-aristocratic combatants).
