We know that some books were not written in Latin: the twelfth-century Peterborough Chronicle, Geoffrey Chaucer’s famous The Canterbury Tales and the popular Wycliffe’s Bible from the fourteenth century were all written in Middle English. Who were these books written for if only the clergy could read and they only read Latin?
