The Mongols inducted conquered peoples into this structure, thereby transforming them into Mongols. They required “recruits” to act, live, and even cut their hair in Mongol fashion.17 If any of these “recruits” might choose not to fight for their new masters and flee from the battlefield, they would do so knowing that the remaining members of their squad of ten would be executed for their desertion. If a whole squad deserted, then the Mongols would execute the entire company of one hundred.
