North of them, centred on the Mälar Valley and the extensive plains bordering it, were the Svíar, spelled today as Svear. There are many forms of the name, but one that has found common use is the Old West Norse Svíþjóð, the ‘Svíar people’, a term sometimes employed for their territory, Svealand.
