Judging by its name, Dunkeld or Dún Cailden (‘fortress of the Caledonians’) had once been the tribal capital, or at least a major centre, of the Caledonian people, one of the Iron Age ‘farmer republics’ of pre-Christian northern Britain.7 The dún itself, the original Dunkeld, is almost certainly the hill known today as ‘King’s Seat’, atop of which is situated an extraordinary rock with enough unnatural features to suggest that it may have been a royal throne or coronation platform.
